Among is Julie W. Chang’s architectural glass installation and mural integrated into the storefront of the Lydian Apartments in downtown Oakland. Completed in 2020, the project was developed with Chandra Cerrito / Art Advisors, who coordinated Chang’s selection and worked with the developer, design team, community stakeholders, and the City of Oakland through design approval, building integration, and installation. The work responds directly to its location between Oakland’s Chinatown and Black Arts Movement Business District. Chang layers African Ankara, bamboo, lotus, and Islamic geometric patterns within insulated glass, allowing imagery to shift and overlap as pedestrians and vehicles move past. The interwoven symbols address cultural migration, resilience, transformation, alienation, and belonging, using difference as a metaphor for social and political harmony. The Lydian is a seven-story mixed-use development by Nash Communities with Holland Partner Group; it opened to residents in 2021.
